PH Electrode

PH is probably the best-known value that has to be monitored and adjusted when it comes to water analysis. And the industries that rely on pH electrodes to measure the pH level accurately are wide and diverse. PH electrodes are used heavily in the laboratories of water-treatment facilities and chemical industries, but are also indispensable for the cultivation of plants through hydroponics, or simply keeping the pH level of your pool, aquarium or fish tank at a perfectly balanced level. PH Electrodes are filled with a special electrolyte solution inside and they have a sensitive, porous glass electrode at the bottom. When you place the pH electrode in a liquid, an exchange of ions takes place that is measured in millivolts. Your pH monitor or pH meter that is connected to the pH electrode will translate this signal into a pH level.


PH Electrodes are sensitive instruments, however with the right amount of care and maintenance you can make them last quite a while. Remember to calibrate your instruments as often as possible and store the pH electrode in KCl Storage Solution when you are not using it. It is imperative the sensitive and porous glass PH electrode never dries out or it will cause permanent damage to the pH electrode.

ORP Electrode

Oxidation Reduction Potential, also known as ORP, also known as Redox, also known as Rx… a chemical reaction that takes place in a liquid when a oxidizing agent is added to the water. A high ORP level would signify a strong oxidizing or disinfection taking place in the liquid, a low ORP level would signify a soft disinfection potential of the liquid in question. ORP Electrodes are usually found in laboratories worldwide for analysis and evaluation of chemical substances and water-treatment. Outside of laboratories, ORP or Redox is best known for the dosing of chlorine in swimming pools. On modern pools, the ORP Electrode is connected to a dosing pump. Depending on the measurement and setpoint of the ORP Electrode, it will tell the dosing pump to inject chlorine into the water.


Electrodes, Calibration and Maintenance

All electrodes require regular calibration, there is absolutely no escaping and no compromise when it comes to caring for your electrodes. Here are a few simple tips we like to share with you. Find our more about how to calibrate a pH electrode right here.

  • Calibrate every time you require the most accurate result, yes, that means each time you need the get the most out of your electrode. Use only fresh and high-quality pH calibration solution and throw away the used liquid after use.
  • Not sure if you need to calibrate? Place it into fresh pH calibration solution and check if how big the discrepancy is between the pH value of the calibration solution and what is displayed on the monitor. A pool would still run fine with a discrepancy of a few 0.01 pH, a lab user probably would not accept such a difference.
  • Do not throw away the protective cap that is supplied with your pH or ORP electrode. Fill it with KCl Storage Solution and place it back on the electrode every time you put it away for a period of time.
  • Store your electrodes in a dark and dry place, out of reach of children. Take care of your instruments.
